地中海沿岸から西アジアが原産です。わが国へは、大正時代に渡来しました。砂礫地に生え、高さは１０〜２０センチになります。葉は光沢のある緑色の線形で、秋にでて冬も残ります。葉の展開から間もなく、濃い黄色の花を咲かせます。地上部は夏に枯死します。鑑賞植物として利用されています

ユリ科キバナタマスダレ属の多年草で、学名は Sternbergia lutea。英名は Fall daffodil、Autumn daffodil。

The fall daffodil (Sternbergia lutea) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It was introduced into Japan in Taisho Era (about 90 years ago). It is a perennial herb that is native to the coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea and West Asia. This herb grows on gravel areas and can reach 10-20 cm in height. The leaves are glossy green, linear, first appear in the fall and remain through the winter. The deep yellow flowers bloom soon after the leaves. The terrestrials are blighted in summer. It is used as an ornamental plant.
