パラグアイが原産の多年草で、正式には「あまは（甘葉）ステビア」といいます。高温地帯に適していて、耐干・耐寒性は弱いとのこと。南アメリカでは、１６世紀ごろから甘味料として使用されています。わが国へは１９７１年に導入されました。甘味の成分はステビオサイドで、カロリーが低くダイエットに向いたハーブです。

The Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Paraguay. This herb thrives in high-temperature and humidity. It has been used as a sweetener in South America from 16th century. It was introduced into Japan in 1971. The sweet constituent is stevioside that is low in calories.
