Bromus japonicus

Bromus japonicus

The Japanese chess (Bromus japonicus) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an annual herb that is widely distributed in the Eurasian continent, including various parts of Japan. It is now naturalized in North America. It grows on sunny roadsides and wastelands and can reach 30-70 cm in height. The leaves are linear and vellus hair grows throughout. From May to July, the flower stalks are extended to produce conical inflorescences, and a lot of pale green spikelets hang down. The Japanese name comes from the fact that this grass resembles "Wild oat" (Avena fatua) and has small spikelets.
