アフリカの中部あるいは南部が原産だと考えられています。古代エジプトでは４千年も前から栽培されていました。わが国へは江戸時代のはじめに中国から渡来したといわれています。茎は蔓性で長く伸び、葉は羽状に深裂し互生します。夏、葉腋に黄色い雄花と雌花を咲かせます。果実はうり状果で、球形から長楕円形になります。内果皮が赤色または黄色に熟し、食用になります。 写真中７の品種は、「黄小玉」（丸種）、 中８は、「金山」（サカタのタネ）、 中９は、「紅小玉」（ナント種苗）、 中１０は、「新大和」（丸種）、 中１１は、「愛娘（まなむすめ）」（ナント種苗）、 中１２は、「サマークリーム」（ナント種苗）、 中１３は、「姫まくら」（丸種）、 中１４は、「黒小玉」、 中１５は、「ボンゴ」（丸種）、 中１６、中１８、下は、「姫甘泉」（丸種）、 中１７は、「姫甘泉ブラック」（丸種）。 |

ウリ科スイカ属の一年草で、学名は Citrullus lanatus。英名は Watermelon。 |

The Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) belongs to Cucurbitaceae (the Gourd family). It is an annual her that is probably native to central or southern Africa. This herb had been cultivated in Egypt before 4000 years ago. It was introduced into Japan via China in early Edo Era (1603-1868). The stem is vine and longated. The leaves are divided into lobes pinnately and alternate. The yellow flowers come in the axils in summer. The fruits are globose to oblong pepo. The inner endocarps ripen red or yellow and edible. |
