インドネシアのスマトラ島が原産です。熱帯雨林に生え、高さは６メートル以上になります。葉は大きな羽状複葉で、上部で３分枝した淡緑色の葉柄のうえにつきます。花序は３メートル以上の高さになり、肉穂花序と仏炎苞が含まれます。仏炎苞は、外部が緑色、内部は赤紫色です。別名で、「しょくだいおおこんにゃく（燭台大蒟蒻）」とも呼ばれます。

サトイモ科コンニャク属の多年草で、学名は Amorphophallus titanum。英名は Titan arum。

The Titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum) belongs to Araceae (the Arum family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Sumatra Island in Indonesia. This herb grows in rainforests and can reach up to 6 m in height. The large pinnate compound leaves grow on a pale green stalk that branches into three sections at the top. The inflorescence can reach over 3 m in height, consists a spadix covered with a spathe. The spathe is green on the outside and dark burgundy red on the inside.
