It grows in hills and mountains and can reach 1-2 m in height. It branches well. The leaves are ovate-elliptic and alternate, with fine serrations on the edges. The leaves turn beautiful in fall. From May to June, green-white flowers come on the tips of the branches of the previous year. The corolla is bell-shaped and has pink streaks, and the tip splits into 5 and bends. The berries ripen to black-purple from June to July and can be eaten. The Japanese name is because it is sour when you chew the leaves.
