インドからマレー半島に分布しています。高さは５〜１０メートルになり、幹や枝には小さな棘があります。葉は２回羽状複葉で、小葉は長楕円形です。５月から６月ごろ、円錐花序をだし、黄色い花を咲かせます。心材は「蘇木（そぼく）」または「蘇芳木（すおうぼく）」と呼ばれ、古代より赤色の染料として利用されてきました。わが国へも飛鳥時代に中国から渡来しています。また漢方でも収斂剤や止瀉薬として用いられてきました。

The Sappan wood (Caesalpinia sappan) belongs to the family Caesalpiniaceae. It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is distributed from India to the Malay Peninsula. The tree grows up to 5-10 m, and there are small spines on the trunks and branches. The leaves are bi-pinnate compound with oblong leaflets. The panicles are borne and blooms yellow flowers from May to June. Heartwood is called "Soboku" or "Suouboku" and has been used as a red dye since ancient times. It was introduced into Japan during the Asuka period (592-710). It has also been used as an astringent and antipruritic in Chinese medicine.
