ヨーロッパ南部から西アジア、北アフリカが原産です。丘陵の低木地帯や岩礫地などに生え、高さは８０〜１２０センチになります。ヨーロッパでは過去数世紀にわたって栽培され、今では帰化しているところもあります。葉は披針形で対生します。６月から８月ごろ、紫紅色の花を咲かせます。全体が白い細毛に被われているので「フランネルそう（フランネル草）」とも呼ばれます。

ナデシコ科センノウ属の二年草で、学名は Lychnis coronaria。英名は Rose campion、Mullein pink。

The Rose campion (Lychnis coronaria) belongs to Caryophyllaceae (the Carnation family). It is a biennial herb that is native from southern Europe to West Asia and northern Africa. This herb grows in hillside scrubs and rocky places and can reach 80-120 cm in height. It has been cultivated in Europe from several centuries ago, nowadays it is naturalized in so many places. The leaves are lanceolate and opposite. The peach bloom flowers come in June to August. It is also called "Flannel-so" (flannel grass) because the whole is covered with white fine hair.
