The Shortawn foxtail (Alopecurus aequalis var. amurensis) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a biennial herb that is distributed all over Japan, as well as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, China and eastern Siberia. This common weed grows in waste lowlands and dry fields, and can reach 20-40 cm in height. The flower season is April to June, and the anthers turn from pale yellow to brown. This herb is played at grass whistle in former days. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "看麥娘" and "看麦娘" (kan mai niang).
