The Japanese paspalum (Paspalum thunbergii) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed throughout Japan, Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, and China. It grows in sunny meadows, between rice paddies, in fields, and along farm roads, and grows 40 to 90 cm tall. The stems are oblique, and the leaves are linear, 10 to 30 cm long and 5 to 10 mm wide. Around August to September, the stem ends branch out into 3 to 5 pieces, and each branch bears two rows of spikelets facing downward. It is called "雀稗" in Taiwan Chinese and "雀稗" (que bai) in Chinese. It is a C4 plant (Plants with C4-type photosynthesis).
