"Suzukake-so" (Veronicastrum villosulum) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Gifu and Tottori prefecture of Honshu, and Tokushima prefecture of Shikoku in Japan. This herb grows in mountain forests and can reach 100-150 cm in height. The stems spread side-upward and arched facing downward. The leaves are ovate and arrarnged in alternate with serrated edges and long hairs. The dark purple flowers bloom in the axillary spherical clusters from July to August. The corolla is tubular and four-lobate at the tips. The Japanese name is derived that the flower-clusters resemble the "Suzukake" which is Yamabushi's (Japanese mountain ascetic hermits) linen kasaya (monk's stole). It has been cultivated as an ornamental plant.
