The "Suzu-take" (Sasamorpha borealis) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an evergreen shrubby bamboo that is native to Japan and the Korean Peninsula. This shrubby bamboo grows in montane beech forests and can reach 2-3 m in height. The stem is about 1 cm across, pale purplish brown and erect. One leaf is borne at the nodes. The node is not swollen. The stem is processed into crafts and so on. "Misuzu-karu Shinano", this makurakotoba, "Misuzu", is another name for "Suzu-take." (Since many "Suzu-take" are produced in Shinano, it depends on "Shinano".)
