マダガスカル島の南部から北西部に広く分布しています。幹は肥大して円筒状になります。葉は５〜８個の掌状複葉で、長い葉柄があります。自生地では、１１月から２月ごろ花を咲かせます。種子は食用にされ、幹はくり抜いて貯水槽などに利用されます。

パンヤ科バオバブ属の落葉高木で、学名は Adansonia za。英名は Za baobab。

The Za baobab (Adansonia za) belongs to the family Bombacaceae. It is a tall evergreen tree that is widely distributed from the south to the northwest of Madagascar. The trunk is enlarged and becomes cylindrical. The leaves are 5 to 8 palmately compound with long petioles. In its own habitat, it blooms from November to February. The seeds are edible, and the trunk is hollowed out for use in water tanks.
