アフリカ東部のケニアから南アフリカ北東部が原産です。乾燥した草地や低地林などに生え、高さは４５〜６０センチになります。一属一種で、多肉質の丈夫な地下茎があります。葉は羽状複葉で、６〜８対の小葉があります。夏から初秋にかけて、黄色い肉穂花序をだします。全草が摂取すると有毒です。

サトイモ科ザミオクルカス属の多年草で、学名は Zamioculcas zamiifolia。英名は ZZ plant、Zanzibar gem。

The ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) belongs to Araceae (the Arum family). It is an only species in the genus Zamioculcas. It is a perennial herb that is native to eastern Africa, from Kenya south to northeastern South Africa. This herb grows in dry grasslands or lowland forests and can reach 45-60 cm in height. It has a stout, succulent rhizome. The leaves are pinnate compound with 6-8 pairs of leaflets. The yellow columnar spadix are borne from mid summer to early fall. The plant is poisonous if ingested.
