中央アメリカから西インド諸島が原産です。わが国へは江戸時代の終わりに渡来しました。草原に生え、高さは１５〜２０センチになります。葉は扁平なひも状です。６月から９月ごろ、花茎を伸ばしてピンク色の花を咲かせます。花は１〜３日ほど咲き続けます。雨が降ったあとに開花することが多く、「レインリリー」とも呼ばれます。和名では「サフランもどき（サフラン擬き）」です。

ユリ科タマスダレ属の多年草で、学名は Zephyranthes carinata (syn. Zephyranthes grandiflora)。英名は Pink rain lily。

The Pink rain lily (Zephyranthes carinata) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Central America and the West Indies. It is introduced into Japan in the last days of Edo Era (1603-1868). This herb grows in grasslands and can reach 15-20 cm in height. The leaves are flat corded. The flowering stalks are borne and the pink flowers bloom from June to September. The flowers remain to bloom 1-3 days. The common name is called "Rain lily" because it often blooms after it rains.
