大アンティル諸島のヒスパニオラ島の固有種です。一属一種です。乾燥した丘陵地に生え、高さは３メートルまでになります。分枝しない茎は直径５センチになり、下向きに尖った棘で武装されています。葉は団扇状で、ほとんど円形、直径６０センチほどになります。葉は幹の上に集まってつきます。葉は地元で屋根葺きや織物に利用されます。

ヤシ科ゾンビヤシ属の常緑低木で、学名は Zombia antillarum。英名は Zombie palm。

Zombie palm (Zombia antillarum) belongs to the Aracaceae (the Palm family). It is a small evergreen tree that is endemic to the island of Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles. It is a species of palm tree and the only member of the genus Zombia. This tree grows in dry, hilly areas, and up to 3 m tall. The unbranched stems can be 5 cm in diameter and are armed with downward pointing spines. The leaves are fan-shaped, almost round, and can be 60cm in diameter. They are crowded atop of the trunk. They are used locally in thatching and weaving.
