インドから東南アジア、パプアニューギニアに分布しています。半日陰の林内などに生え、高さは１〜２メートルになります。塊茎から１個の葉柄を伸ばし、大きな羽状葉をつけます。褐色で漏斗形の仏炎苞に包まれた肉穂花序をだします。ゾウの足に似た塊茎にはデンプンが含まれ、若い葉柄は茹でて食用にされます。

サトイモ科コンニャク属の多年草で、学名は Amorphophallus paeoniifolius (syn. Amorphophallus campanulatus)。英名は Elephant yam、Elephant-foot yam。

The Elephant yam (Amorphophallus paeoniifolius) belongs to Araceae (the Arum Family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in India to Southeast Asia and Papua New Guinea. This herb grows in semi-shade places of woodlands and can reach 1-2 m in height. The tuber sends out a leaf stalk with large pinnate leaf. The terminal spadix is covered with brown funnel-shaped spathe. The tuber is elephant's foot like and contains starch. The young stalks are used for boiled greens.
