わが国の固有種で、本州の近畿地方南部から四国・九州に分布しています。沢沿いや林縁などに生え、高さは１〜２メートルになります。葉は卵状長楕円形から楕円形で互生し、縁には不揃いな鋸歯があります。５月から６月ごろ、枝先に総状花序をだし、小さな白色の花をいっぱい咲かせます。若葉が食べられることから、「よめなのき（嫁菜の木）」の別名があります。

ユキノシタ科ズイナ属の落葉低木で、学名は Itea japonica。英名はありません。

"Zuina" (Itea japonica) belongs to Saxifragaceae (the Saxifrage family). It is a small deciduous tree that is endemic species of Japan and distributed from southern Kinki district of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. This tree grows along mountain streams, in outskirts of woods and can reach 1-2 m in height. The leaves are ovate-oblong to elliptic and alternate with irregular toothed edges. The racemes are borne on the terminal branches and bloom many small white flowers in May to June. The young leaves are edible.
