The Dwarf Japanese torreya (Torreya nucifera var. radicans) belongs to Taxaceae (the Yew family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed along the Sea of Japan coast of Honshu, from Yamagata Prefecture and beyond westward, the Kii Peninsula of Honshu, and Ishizuchi in Shikoku. It is a variant that has adapted to snowy regions, and grows in the forest floor of mountains, reaching a height of 2 to 3 m. The lower part of the trunk creeps along the ground, and the branches slant upwards from the base. The branches are slightly reddish. The leaves are linear, 20 to 25 mm long, and the tip is needle-like. The underside is green and has narrow linear stomatal bands. It is dioecious, and flowers bloom from April to May. The male flowers are yellow, and the female flowers are green. The seeds are wrapped in a green aril, and ripen to a purplish brown color around October of the following year.
