The Nepalese hog plum (Choerospondias axillaris) belongs to Anacardiaceae (the Sumac family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is native around the Himalaya. This tree also grows in local mountains of Kyushu, Japan. It is dioecious. It can reach about 25 m in height, the leaves are odd-pinnate compound and alternate. The terminal panicles are borne and bloom small reddish-browm flowers in May. The fruits ripen yellowish-white in fall and have sweet and sour flavor, edible. The Japanese name is derived from its leaves, which resemble "Chanchin" (Chinese toom, a member of the Mahogany family). In Chinese, it is called "南酸棗" (nan suan zao).
