中国の南部が原産です。わが国へは江戸時代に渡来しています。高さは３０〜６０センチほどになり、葉は厚紙質の楕円状倒卵形で対生します。春に穂状花序をだし、芳香のある淡黄色の花を咲かせます。花には花弁はなく、３個の雄しべがあります。和名は、葉が「ちゃのき」の似ていることから。中国語では「金粟蘭（jin su lan）」と呼ばれます。

センリョウ科チャラン属の常緑小低木で、学名は Chloranthus spicatus。英名はありません。

The Chloranthus spicatus belongs to the family Chloranthaceae. It is an evergreen shrub that is native to southern China. This shrub was introduced into Japan in Edo Era (1603-1868). This shrub can reach 30-60 cm in height. The leaves are pasteboardy, elliptic-obovate and opposite. The fragrant pale yellow flowers come in the termial spikes in spring. This flower is apetalous and has 3 stamens. It is called "金粟蘭" (jin su lan) in Chinese.
