アメリカのミシシッピー川の下流域におもに分布しています。沼沢地や河川、水路などに生え、高さは６０〜９０センチになります。葉は剣状広線形で、冬期には落葉します。５月から６月ごろ、赤茶色の花を咲かせます。外花被片は３個で垂れ下がり、基部には靴べらのような付属物があります。３個の内花被片も比較的大きく、やや狭いくらいです。園芸品種の「ルイジアナアイリス」の母種となっています。

アヤメ科アヤメ属の多年草で、学名は Iris fulva。英名は Copper iris、Red iris。

The Copper iris (Iris fulva) belongs to Iridaceae (the Iris family). It is also called "Red iris". It is a perennial herb that is native to the lower reach of Mississippi in the United States. This herb grows in swamps, streams or ditches and can reach 60-90 cm in height. The leaves are sword broad-linear and defoliate in winter. The reddish-brown flowers come in May to June. The 3 outer tepals are drooping with shoehorn-like appendixes at the bases. The 3 inner tepals are relatively large and narrower than outer ones. Copper iris is a host species of cultivar 'Louisiana iris'.
