アメリカの東南部から中南部それにメキシコ北部に分布しています。高原の渓谷や岩礫地に生え、高さは１５メートルほどになります。樹皮は暗灰色で、割れ目が入って狭い鱗片状の稜ができます。葉は楕円形から倒卵形で全縁です。互生するか短枝の先に集まってつきます。夏に葉腋から細い花梗をだし、小さな白い花を咲かせます。果実は核果で、秋に紫黒色に熟し、甘くて食べることができます。ただし大量に摂取すると目眩や胃障害の原因になるといわれています。

アカテツ科ブメリア属の半常緑高木で、学名は Bumelia lanuginosa。英名は Chittamwood、Gum bumelia。

The Chittamwood (Bumelia lanuginosa) belongs to Sapotaceae (the Sapote family). It is a small semi-evergreen tree that is distributed from the southeastern part to the central-southern parts of the United States and northern Mexico. It grows in valleys and conglomerates on the plateau and is about 15 m high. The bark is dark gray with cracks and narrow scaly ridges. The leaves are elliptic to obovate and entire. It alternates or gathers at the tip of a short branch. In the summer, thin peduncles come out from the axils and small white flowers come in bloom. The fruits are drupes, which ripen purple-black in the fall and are sweet and edible. However, it is said that taking a large amount may cause dizziness and stomach disorders.
