わが国の固有種で、本州の日本海側と四国の剣山に分布しています。深山の多湿な斜面に生え、高さは２０〜８０センチになります。下部の茎は分枝しません。葉は長楕円状披針形で対生し、鋸歯があります。８月から１０月ごろ、茎の上部で数個分枝し、茎頂に頭花を咲かせます。花はすべて筒状花で、舌状花はありません。また花柄は長く、白色の縮毛が密生します。果実は長さ５ミリほどの痩果です。別名で「くまぎく（熊菊）」とも呼ばれます。

キク科ウサギギク属の多年草で、学名は Arnica mallatopus。英名はありません。

"Choji-giku" (Arnica mallatopus) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is endemic to Japan and distributed to the Japan Sea Side of Honshu and Mount Tsurugi in Shikoku. This herb grows in wet slopes in deep mountains and can reach 20-80 cm in height. The lower stem is not branched. The leaves are oblong-lanceolate, opposite and serrated. The upper stem is several branched and the flower-heads bloom atop of branched stems from August to October. The flower-heads consist entirely of tubular flowers. The peduncles are long and covered with white frizzy hairs. The fruits are achenes, about 5 mm long.
