わが国の本州、中部地方にだけ分布し、亜高山帯から高山帯の岩礫地に生えています。高さは１０〜５０センチほどになります。卵形の葉は互生して、枝先に集まります。７月から８月ごろ、淡い紅色を帯びた白い花を咲かせます。「こめつつじ（米躑躅）」の変種で、ふつうの「こめつつじ」の雄しべが５本なのに対して、これは４本です。名前は、香料の｢ちょうじ（丁字）｣に似た小さな「つつじ（躑躅）」ということから。

ツツジ科ツツジ属の落葉小低木で、学名は Rhododendron tschonoskii var. tetramerum。英名はありません。

"Choji-kome-tsutsuji" (Rhododendron tschonoskii var. tetramerum) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a deciduous shrub that is distributed only in Chubu district of Honshu in Japan. This shrub grows in subalpine to alpine screes, and the height is about 10 to 50 cm. The leaves are ovate, alternated and gather at the ends of branches. The pale reddish white flowers come in July to August. It is a variant of "Kome-tsutsuji" which having 5 stamens, though "Choji-kome-tsutsuji" has 4 stamens.
