"Chonosuke-so" (Dryas octopetala var. asiatica) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a deciduous shrub that is distributed in the Northern and Southern Alps, Yatsugatake, Hokendake in Honshu and Hokkaido in Japan, and Northeast Asia . It grows on gravel in the alpine zone and can reach 5 to 10 cm in height. The leaves are elliptic, with round serrations on the edges and dented veins. From June to July, white to pale yellow flowers come on the tips of the flower stalks. There are 8-9 petals. The name comes from Chonosuke Sugawa, who was discovered at the beginning of the Meiji era (about 150 years ago).
