The Korean golden ball tree (Forsythia viridissima var. koreana) belongs to Oleaceae (the Olive family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to the Korean Peninsula. It grows in mountainous forests and reaches a height of 2 to 3 m. The trunk grows in clumps, and the branches extend widely, arching downward. The leaves are elliptical and somewhat broad, with a dark green upper surface and sharp serrations along the margins. From around March to April, before the leaves unfurl, 1 to 3 deep yellow flowers bloom from lateral buds on the previous year's branches. The corolla is about 3 cm in diameter and deeply lobed into four parts. The fruit is an ovoid capsule that ripens from October to November.
