インドから東南アジアが原産です。現在では熱帯・亜熱帯地域に広く野生化しています。またわが国へも江戸時代には渡来しています。名前は、花のかたちをチョウに見立てたもの。６月から９月ごろ、変形した「あさがお」のような花を咲かせます。縞模様が入るのが特徴です。花色は青色ですが、白色やオレンジ色などの園芸品種もあります。葉は飼料に、未熟な豆果は食用に、また根は下剤に利用されます。

マメ科チョウマメ属の多年草で、学名は Clitoria ternatea。英名は Butterfly pea、Blue pea。

The Butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Southeast Asia and India. It is naturalized widely in the tropical and sub-tropical areas nowadays. It is also introduced into Japan in Edo Era (about 270 years ago). This herb blooms deformed funnel-like flowers in June through September. The flowers are blue and striped pattern. The white and orange flower-colored cultivars are breeded. The leaves are used for animal consumption, the young seed pods for food and the roots for laxative.
