南アメリカが原産です。湿り気のある場所や耕作地、道ばたなどに生え、高さは５０〜１５０センチになります。茎や枝は直立し、はっきりとした４稜があります。葉は広線形から狭楕円形で、基部は切形をしています。６月から９月ごろ、枝先の集散状の穂状花序に青色から赤紫色の花を咲かせます。

クマツヅラ科クマツヅラ属の多年草で、学名は Verbena incompta。英名は Purpletop verbena。

The Purpletop verbena (Verbena incompta) belongs to Verbenaceae (the Verbena family). It is a perennial herb that is native to South America. This herb grows in waste lands, cultivated areas or on roadsides and can reach 50-150 cm in height. The stem and branches are erect and conspicuously quadrangular. The leaves are broad-linear to narrow-elliptic with subauriculate bases. The corymbose spikes are borne on the terminal branches and bloom blue to reddish purple flowers from June to September.
