"Daruma-giku" (Aster spathulifolius) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an evergreen herb that is distributed on the Sea of Japan side of the Chugoku region of Honshu and Kyushu in Japan, the Korean Peninsula, and the Russian Far East. It grows on rocky shores and gravel, and is about 20 to 30 cm high. The base of the stem becomes woody and spreads sideways. The leaves are spatula-shaped and are covered with long vellus hair and glandular hair. From October to December, pale mauve flower heads bloom at the tip of a long peduncle.
