中国からベトナムにかけて分布しています。東南アジアでは、広く庭園用に植栽されています。高さは１５メートルほどになり、節間が短くて膨らみます。別名で、「ぶっとちく・ぶったんちく（仏肚竹）」とも呼ばれますが、これは節間の膨らみを仏さまのお腹に見立てたもの。浜名湖花博では「だいぶっとちく（大仏肚竹）」と表示されていました。

イネ科ホウライチク属のタケ類で、学名は Bambusa ventricosa。英名は Buddha's belly bamboo、Buddha belly。

The Buddha's belly bamboo (Bambusa ventricosa) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an evergreen bamboo that is distributed from China to Vietnam. It is widely planted for gardens in Southeast Asia. The height is about 15 m and the internodes are short and swell. It is also called "Buttochiku" (Buddha's belly bamboo) by alias, but this resembles the swelling internodes to the belly of the Buddha.
