The "Dakiba-hime-azami" (Cirsium amplexifolium) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in the Tohoku region (excluding Fukushima Prefecture) and Niigata Prefecture in Japan. It grows on the edges of forests in lowlands and mountainous areas. It grows to a height of 150-200 cm. The stem is powdery white or reddish purple and hollow. The leaves are elliptic to slightly broad lanceolate, with a variety of margins ranging from entire to serrated to pinnate. The leaves at the base of the stem are deeply cut and enfold the stem like auricles. The base of the leaves at the top of the stem enfolds the stem. From August to October, reddish-purple flower heads about 3 cm in diameter bloom upward at the tips of the branches. The involucrum is bell-shaped and not sticky, and the outer and middle involucral scales are linear-lanceolate, elongated, and curved backward in the middle.
