The Fire weed (Erechitites hieracifoli) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an annual herb that is native to North America. It is also can now be seen in logging areas, roadsides, and so on. The Japanese name is derived from the fact that it was discovered in the Mount Dando in Aichi prefecture at the beginning of the Showa era (about 80 years ago). The stem is branched at the top, and has a height of about 50-100 cm. Leaves are slender, young leaves are edible. The pale yellow to white flower-heads which have thin and puckered tips bloom from September to October. Ater flowering, the seeds with long white pappus will be scattered on the wind.
