西インド諸島から熱帯アメリカが原産です。わが国へは、観賞用として江戸時代の初期に渡来しました。今では暖地で帰化しています。高さは６０〜１５０センチになります。８月から１０月ごろ、赤色から朱色の花を咲かせます。種子は１０月に熟し、宝石類に広く利用されます。

カンナ科カンナ属の多年草で、学名は Canna indica。英名は Indian shot。

The Indian shot (Canna indica) belongs to Cannaceae (the Canna family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the Caribbean and tropical Americas. It was introduced into Japan as an ornamental plant in the early days of Edo Era (1603-1868). Nowadays, it is naturalized in the warmest parts of Japan. This herb can reach 60-150 cm in height. The red or vermillion flowers bloom from August to October. The seeds ripen in October, and they are widely used for jewelery.
