北アメリカの西部と南部に分布しています。荒れ地や平原、乾燥した丘陵、道ばたなどに生え、高さは３０〜９０センチになります。茎は単幹で、ときに上部でわずかの枝をだします。葉は羽状に分裂し、長さ２０センチ以上になります。４月から６月ごろ、複散形花序をだし、小さな白い花を咲かせます。根には、「にんじん」のような香りがあります。

セリ科ニンジン属の越年草で、学名は Daucus pusillus。英名は Rattlesnake weed、American wild carrot。

The Rattlesnake weed (Daucus pusillus) belongs to Apiaceae (the Carrot family). It is a biennial herb that is native to western and southern North America. This herb grows in barrens, plains, dry hills and roadsides, and can reach 30-90 cm in height. The stem is single and sometimes has a few branches in its upper half. The leaves are divided into pinnately up to 20 cm long. The compond umbels are borne and bloom small white flowers in April to June. The roots have the characteristic carrot odor.
