わが国の奄美大島から沖縄、そして東南アジア、インド、ミクロネシアなどに広く分布しています。高さは１５メートルにもなり、幹や枝には太く鋭い棘が生えています。３月から５月ごろ、枝先に長い総状花序をだし、真っ赤な花を咲かせます。葉は３出複葉で、花の最盛期後に展開します。黄色い斑入りの品種もあります。沖縄県の県花で、街路樹や公園樹として植栽されています。 |

マメ科デイゴ属の落葉高木で、学名は Erythrina variegata。英名は Coral tree、Tiger's claw。 |

The Coral tree (Erythrina variegata) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a deciduous tall tree that is distributed widely, southward from Amami Island, Okinawa Islands in Japan to Southeast Asia, India and Micronesia. This tree can reach about 15 m in height, The thick acute spines are borne on the stems and branches. Bright red flowers come in the long terminal racemes from March to May. The leaves are 3-lobed compounds and foliate after flowering peak. There are yellow variegated species. Coral tree is a prefectural flower of Okinawa and are planted for boulevard trees or garden trees. |
