アメリカ西部の内陸部に分布しています。亜高山帯の草地や林に生え、高さは１．５メートルほどになります。葉はいくぶん丸く、いくつかの裂片に分裂します。花には５個の濃い紫青色の萼片があります。夏、長い花序にいっぱいの花を咲かせます。この植物は長命で、７５年以上生きることもあります。

The Subalpine larkspur (Delphinium barbeyi) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the interior parts of the western United States. This herb grows in subalpine meadows and woodlands, and it can reach up to 1.5 m in height. The leaves are somewhat rounded in outline and are divided into several lobes. The flower has five dark purple-blue sepals. The hundreds of flowers bloom in the long inflorescence in summer. The plant is long-lived, capable of exceeding 75 years of age.
