北アメリカに自生しています。大草原や岩の多い林間などに生え、高さは３０〜６０センチになります。根生葉は葉柄が長く、灰色がかった緑色で、掌状に裂けて５個の深く切り取られた葉になっています。４月から５月ごろ、長い花序に、６〜１４個、青色から白色の距のある花を咲かせます。個々の花には、５個の花びらのような萼片と４個の花弁があります。萼片はふつう紫青色から紫色ですが、白色で斑入りになることもあります。４個の花弁は、非常に小さいです。果実は３つの部分に分かれる袋果です。

キンポウゲ科ヒエンソウ属の多年草で、学名は Delphinium carolinianum。英名は Carolina larkspur、Wild larkspur。

The Carolina larkspur (Delphinium carolinianum) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is native to North America. This herb grows in prairies and rocky glades, and can reach 30-60 cm in height. The basal leaves are long-petioled, grayish-green, palmately cleft into five deeply cut lobes. The 6-14 blue to white spurred flowers bloom in the long inflorescence from April to May. The each flower has five petal-like sepals and four petals. The sepals are usually violet blue to purple, but sometimes variegated with white. The four petals are very small. The fruit is a seedpod which separates into 3 parts.
