ニューギニア島と周辺のいくつかの島々に分布しています。標高が３００〜７５０メートルの熱帯雨林にある樹木の幹などに着生します。球茎は棍棒状から紡錘形で、革質で卵形から楕円形の葉を２〜４個つけます。冬から初夏にかけて、短い総状花序をだし、芳香のある淡い黄緑色の花を咲かせます。唇弁は紫色で、花弁や萼片には褐色の斑点があります。

ラン科セッコク属の常緑多年草で、学名は Dendrobium atroviolaceum。英名は Black blood-red dendrobium。

The Black blood-red dendrobium (Dendrobium atroviolaceum) belongs to Orchidaceae (the Orchid family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed to New Guinea and several surrounding islands. It grows on tree trunks in tropical rainforests at an altitude of 300 to 750 m. The corm is club-shaped to spindle-shaped, leathery, with 2-4 ovate to elliptic leaves. From winter to early summer, it produces short racemes and blooms fragrant pale yellow-green flowers. The labella are purple and the petals and calyxes have brown spots.
