オーストラリア北東部のクイーンズランド州や、チモール周辺諸島が原産です。この原種を中心に交配・改良されたものが広く普及しています。これらの品種はふつうには「デンファレ」と呼ばれ、高さが２０〜１００センチほどになります。種名は「こちょうらん」に似ていることから。また着生ランで、高温多湿を好みます。温度と日照さえあれば、一年中花を咲かせます。

ラン科セッコク属の常緑多年草で、学名は Dendrobium phalaenopsis。英名は Cocktown orchid。

The Cocktown orchid (Dendrobium phalaenopsis) belongs to Orchidaceae (the Orchid family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to Queensland of northeast Australia and the Timor Islands. Many cultivars which are intercrossed from original species prevail widely. They are generally called "Denphalae" and can reach 20-100 cm in height. This orchid is an epiphyte, like high temperature and humidity. This continues to bloom through the year if the temperature and sunshine are avairable.
