The Dianthus haematocalyx belongs to Caryophyllaceae (the Carnation family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in southeastern Europe, from Albania to Yugoslavia and Greece. It grows in subalpine meadows and sandy gravel, and is 10-25 cm tall. The leaves are gray-green and linear. In summer, it produces one to three dark pink flowers at the end of a branched flower stalk.
