The teosinte (Dioon mejiae) belongs to Cycadaceae (the Cycad family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to Honduras and Nicaragua. This tree grows in semi-deciduous tropical rainforests, and up to 1 m in height. The fronds radiate out from the trunk and are obliquely erect. The leaves are pinnate compound, to about 1-2 m long with 120-200 leaflets. The male cones are spindle shaped, pale brown, 30-80 cm long, 8-10 cm in diameter. The female cones are very large pale brown, ovoidal cones on an elongated peduncle, reaching 30-50 cm long, 20-30 cm in width.
