The Dioon merolae belongs to Cycadaceae (the Cycad family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to Chiapas in southern Mexico. It grows rarely in pine and oak forests, at 900-1200 m elevation. This tree is well adapted to teperate to sub-tropical climate, and can reach about 6 m in height. The leaves are bright green, large, pinnately compound.
