メキシコのベラクルス州とオアハカ州が原産です。熱帯雨林の石灰岩の崖や岩礫地の丘陵などに生え、高さは１２メートルまでになります。葉は羽状複葉で、長さが約１．５〜２．１メートルに成長し、幹から放射状に広がります。個々の葉には、小さくて平らな１２０〜２４０個の小葉があり、小さな棘があり、先が細くなっています。

ソテツ科サゴソテツ属の常緑低木で、学名は Dioon spinulosum。英名は Giant dioon、Gum palm。

The Giant dioon (Dioon spinulosum) belongs to Cycadaceae (the Cycad family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to Veracruz and Oaxaca, Mexico. This tree grows on limestone cliffs and rocky hillsides in the tropical rainforests, and to 12 m in height. The leaves are pinnate compound, grow to about 1.5-2.1 m in length and radiate out from the trunk. The 120-240 leaflets on each leaf are small and flat, have small thorns and taper to a sharp point.
