The False yellowhead (Dittrichia viscosa) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the Mediterranean. It grows in meadows, sandy and gravelly areas, wastelands, and along roadsides, and is 30 to 150 cm tall. The leaves are ovate to lanceolate, serrated, and covered with short fine hairs. From July to December, it produces racemes at the tops of stems and branch tips, and produces many yellow head flowers. There are about 15 ray florets and 45 disk florets in the flower head. It is naturalized in the United States and Australia and is considered an invasive species. The genus is named after the German botanist Manfred Dittrich (1934-2016).
