The Purple-leafed hop bush (Dodonaea viscosa 'Purpurea') belongs to Sapindaceae (the Soapberry family). It is a small evergreen tree. This selection of 'Purpurea' was discovered in the early 1890s by a gardener, Mrs. Thomas Wilkins, growing along the Wairau River near Marlborough, near the northern tip of New Zealand's South Island. It is believed to be a "color sport" due to a mutation that occurs sporadically in wild populations. It grows to a height of 3 to 6 m or more. The leaves are usually obovate, but some are lanceolate. The leaves are bronzy-green in color, but turn purple in cold weather. Small green flowers bloom in clusters in midsummer, and brown "maple"-like samaras are produced in late summer.
