わが国の各地をはじめ、北半球の温帯地域に広く分布しています。湿地に生え、高さは６０〜１００センチになります。「せり」に似ていますが、全体に大きく、香りもありません。全草が有毒です。「せり」は水辺に生え、「どくぜり」は水中に生えます。葉は２回羽状複葉で、６月から８月ごろ、枝先の複散形花序に小さな白い花を咲かせます。

The Cowbane (Cicuta virosa) belongs to Apiaceae (the Carrot family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed throughout Japan and widely in the temperate areas of Northern Hemisphere. This herb grows in marshes and can reach 60-100 cm in height. It resembles to the Japanese parsley (Oenanthe javanica), though it is large and has no flavor. The whole plant is poisonous. Japanese parsley grows in water's edges, and Cowbane grows in water. The leaves are bipinnate. The compound umbels are borne at the terminal branches and bloom small white flowers from June to August.
