アメリカの太平洋岸、オレゴン州南部からカリフォルニア州中部に分布しています。海岸近くの草地やまばらな潅木帯に生え、高さは１５〜８０センチになります。葉は槍形で光沢があり、しなやかで叢生します。３月から５月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして紫色から赤紫色の花を咲かせます。

アヤメ科アヤメ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Iris douglasiana。英名は Douglas's iris。

The Douglas's iris (Iris douglasiana) belongs to Iridaceae (the Iris family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to the Pacific Ocean Side of the United States, from southern Oregon to central California. This herb grows in coastal grasslands and scrubs, and can reach 15-80 cm in height. The leaves are lance-shaped, glossy, supple and crowded. The purple to magenta flowers come on the stalks from March to May.
