The cornstalk dracaena (Dracaena fragrans) belongs to Agavaceae (the Agave family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native throughout tropical Africa, from Sudan south to Mozambique. This tree grows in upland regions at 600-2,250 m altitude, and it can reach up to 15 m in height. It is a slow growing shrub, usually multistemmed at the base. The leaves are glossy green, lanceolate, and usually drooping. The white to pink, fragrant flowers bloom in the panicles from late fall to early winter. The fruits are orange-red berries 1-2 cm diameter.
