ギリシャからバルカン半島それにトルコにかけて分布しています。岩場や丘陵に生え、高さは９０センチほどになります。葉は掌状に分裂し濃緑色、ときに葉脈に沿ってクリーム色の斑点がでます。晩春から初夏、花を咲かせます。花は大きな紫色の仏炎苞と肉穂花序があり、受粉のためにハエを惹きつけるように、腐った肉のような不快臭がします。花後、緑色の液果をつけ、秋には熟して橙赤色になります。

サトイモ科ドラクンクルス属の多年草で、学名は Dracunculus vulgaris。英名は Dragon arum。

The Dragon arum (Dracunculus vulgaris) belongs to Araceae (the Arum family). It is a perennial herb that is native from Greece to the Balkans to Turkey. This herb grows in rocky areas and hillsides and can reach about 90 cm in height. The leaves are palmately-divided, dark green and have occasional cream flecks along the veins. The flowers bloom in late spring and early summer. They have large purple spathe and spadix, which has a very unpleasant smell reminiscent of rotting meat to attract flies as pollinators. After flowering, it bears green berries which mature to orange-red in fall.
